The book Territórios: identidade e diversidade na arte contemporânea lusófona (Territories: Identity and Diversity in Contemporary Lusophone Art - Works from the Collection of the PLMJ Foundation) aims to continue the editorial line that the Foundation has been following since its inception. It is dedicated to understanding the plurality of genres of artistic creation that exist in Portuguese-speaking countries, in a broad geography that has developed over the last few decades.
This book contains texts by João Silvério, who is responsible for selecting and organising the works presented, and by guest authors whose texts highlight the various themes of artistic creation in the Portuguese-speaking world.
Ana Balona de Oliveira’s text Descolonizando a ‘Lusofonia’ (Decolonising ‘Lusophony’) through the Visual Arts of Portuguese-speaking African Countries and their Diaspora” invites the reader to reflect historically on the visual arts and the political and cultural contexts that have emerged in recent decades.
Through the text Eu sou onde eu estou - ou como imaginar o futuro a partir de uma Coleção de Arte Contemporânea (I am where I am - or how to imagine the future from a contemporary art collection), Melissa Rodrigues introduces a new proposal in the Foundation’s editorial field - the adoption of a didactic language aimed at a younger audience, attentive to the historical and cultural realities that shape their formation as citizens of the world.
From this perspective, this work aims to rethink the Foundation’s collection as a shared space for dialogue between artists, cultural agents and the various communities that contemporary art draws as a map of the Portuguese-speaking world in permanent construction.
