A Preto & Branco na Coleção da Fundação PLMJ (Black & White in the collection of the PLMJ Foundation) presents a series of works in which black and white photography is central, covering several decades of photographic production in Portugal and in Portuguese-speaking countries, and reflecting the importance of documentary and artistic photography in the collection of the PLMJ Foundation.
Two notes by André Bazin, taken from the text The Ontology of the Photographic Image, situate the photographic image and the drawing: “Photography’s objectivity gives it a power of credibility that is lacking in any pictorial work. Whatever the objections of our critical spirit, we are obliged to believe in the existence of the object represented (...), that is, made present in time and space. Photography benefits from a transfer of the reality of the thing to its reproduction”. And as for the drawing, “the more faithful may give us more information about the model, but it will never possess, in spite of our critical spirit, the irrational power of photography that determines our belief”.
