Sofia Leitão (1977) graduated in sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP) in 2005 and in drawing from the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP) in 2000.
In 2005, she had her first solo exhibition at the MCO Gallery in Porto, as well as three group exhibitions: Anteciparte in Lisbon, XIII Cerveira Biennial in Vila Nova de Cerveira, and 100 Drawings at Maus Hábitos. In 2006, she participated in the exhibitions Young Giant Painters at the MCO Gallery and Surrounding Matta-Clark at the Carlos Carvalho Gallery in Lisbon.
In 2009, her work was shown for the first time in Austria, in the Portuguese Pavilion at Hangar-7 in Salzburg. In the same year, she participated in Amália, Coração Independente at the Berardo Museum in Lisbon. Her work was included in the first edition of the Vale do Tejo Triennale (2010), as well as in Mono (2010) and Negras Paixões (2011) at the Círculo de Artes Plásticas in Coimbra, Portugal.
In 2014, she participated in the exhibition Casa Occupada at Casa da Cerca, Centre for Contemporary Art. In the same year, she participated in the group exhibition Da Cartografia do Poder aos Itinerários do Saber at the Afrobrasil Museum in São Paulo.
In 2015, she participated in the exhibition A Boca do Inferno at Sismógrafo, Porto. Also in 2015, she presented the solo exhibition Unweaving the Rainbow at Galeria MCO Arte Contemporânea, Porto.
Her work can be found in the collections of Manuel de Brito and the PLMJ Foundation in Lisbon and the Ilídio Pinho Foundation in Porto, as well as in many private collections in Portugal, Spain, and Austria.
