Nuno Calvet

Nuno Calvet (Oeiras, 1932 - Viana do Alentejo, 2023). At the age of 25, he developed an interest in photography, deepening his practice as an amateur starting in 1955, while maintaining his profession as a sound technician. In 1978, he produced works related to the celebrations of the 8th Centenary of the Coutos de Alcobaça and created the entire photographic work for the commemorative book of the 100th anniversary of the poet Teixeira de Pascoaes’ birth. From 1979 onward, he focused his efforts on editorial work, completing commissions for publishers such as Reader’s Digest Selections, Círculo de Leitores, Quetzal Editores, Editorial Verbo, Hugin Editores, among others. In 1981, he was invited to exhibit in Florence and at the Diafragma Gallery in Milan. In January 1983, he held an exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, featuring 60 photographs depicting the land, countryside, and people of the Alentejo, titled "Além terra." This collection included earlier works from 1971, particularly focused on human figures. Among his numerous publications, notable works include As Mais Belas Cidades de Portugal (The Most Beautiful Cities of Portugal, Verbo, April 1997), Os Mais Belos Palácios de Portugal (The Most Beautiful Palaces of Portugal, Verbo, April 1998), As Mais Belas Igrejas de Portugal (The Most Beautiful Churches of Portugal, Verbo, April 1998), Festas e Comeres do Povo Português II (Festivities and Cuisine of the Portuguese People II, Verbo, Lisbon, 1999) in collaboration with Maria de Lourdes Modesto and Afonso Praça, Tesouros do Artesanato Português (Treasures of Portuguese Crafts) in four volumes (Verbo, 2001), Além Terra - Viagem ao Alentejo (Beyond the Land - A Journey to Alentejo, Intermezzo Audiovisuais, March 2005), and Contemporaneidade (Contemporaneity, Lipor, April 2009).
