Monteiro Gil was born on 14 March 1943 in Guarda. A graduate of the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, he received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1964-68), taught secondary school, taught photography, was a member of the Diferença cooperative and was part of the Iris group (1992-97). He took part in dozens of solo and group exhibitions and published several books, including Prata Negra (Fim de Século Ed, 1992), As Pedras e o Tempo (Cooperativa Diferença, 1993), Lisboa Qualquer Lugar - Lisboa Qualquer Lisboa (Cooperativa Diferença, 1994) and Made in U.S.A. - Impressões de Viagem (Cooperativa Diferença, 1996), all associated with the Iris Group; Um país de farínquas fronteiras (Câmara Municipal da Guarda, 2000); Um (e)terno olhar. Eduardo Lourenço, Vergílio Ferreira e a Guarda (Centre for Iberian Studies, 2008); or Leite, cardo e mãos frias. O queijo da Serra da Estrela no concelho da Guarda, (Guarda Municipal Council, 2009), to name but a few, all in collaboration with other authors (Fernando Curado Matos, Luís Azevedo, Alberto Picco and Agostinho Gonçalves, among others). He lives and works in Lisbon. His works are part of various private and public collections and are represented in museums in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy.
