José Correia Marafona (Vila do Conde, 1952) is a Portuguese photographer who, after a 20-year break, has rediscovered his true artistic expression in conceptual photography.
Throughout his career he has exhibited in some of Portugal's most prestigious cultural institutions, such as the Serralves Museum and the Soares dos Reis Museum in Porto, the Casino in Póvoa de Varzim and the Galeria de Arte Moderna in Lisbon. He has also taken part in various exhibitions in places such as the Biblioteca Municipal do Porto in the Palácio de Cristal, the Fórum Romeu Correia in Almada and the Museu de Huesca in Spain, in the exhibition Fotografia Portuguesa até aos anos 70. He has played an active role in the photographic community, as a technical advisor for the group B&W Humanist and Street Photography Corner, and as a trainer in laboratory practices at the Academia Contemporânea do Espetáculo and the Cine Clube do Porto. He was one of the founders of the first group of independent photographers in Portugal, IF (Ideia e Forma). He has participated in various national and international photography competitions, winning several first prizes and honourable mentions. His work has also been published in specialist magazines such as Foto Jornal, Anuário Português de Fotografia and Super Foto Prática.
