José Manuel Rodrigues (Lisbon, 1951) lives and works in Évora. He studied Photography at the School voor Fotografie in The Hague and the Stichting de Nederlandse Fotovakschool in Apeldoorn and completed a video directing course at the Santbergen Institute in Hilversum.
He co-founded Perspektief, an Arts Association, where he was responsible for programming exhibitions at its gallery. He was a member of the Association of Art Photographers (G.K.F.) and the Amsterdamse Kunstraad (Amsterdam Arts Council) from 1987 to 1992. He received scholarships from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1986–1987, 1995, and 1996), a working grant from the Fonds voor de Beeldende Kunst (Netherlands) in 1992, and a grant from Portugal’s Centro Nacional de Cultura in 1997.
