Gonçalo Pena

Gonçalo Pena was born in Lisbon (1967), where he still lives and works. In 2012 he moved to Bergen, Norway, where he lived until 2014. He graduated in painting from the Lisbon Academy of Fine Arts. He holds a master's degree in Communication Sciences from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with a thesis on design issues.
He taught painting and drawing at ESAD, the Caldas da Rainha School of Art and Design, from 1995 to 2005, when he decided to devote himself exclusively to his artistic practice: painting and illustration.
He has been working as an illustrator since 1993 and his work has been published in important Portuguese newspapers and magazines (Independente, Público, ler, Egoísta, Livros). He has also worked in other media such as painting, cinema (Super8) and performance.
In June 2014, a book was published by Mousse Publishers and edited by João Maria Gusmão + Pedro Paiva, with a collection of his drawings, which were part of the Monkey Trip exhibition at Galleria Zero, Milan.
