Gonçalo Mabunda was born in Maputo, Mozambique, in 1975, where he continues to live and work. A self-taught artist, he is a member of the Núcleo de Arte in Maputo. He has been exhibiting his work since the late 1990s, both individually and in group shows, in Mozambique and internationally. His work has been featured in exhibitions and events such as Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf; Hayward Gallery, London; Pompidou, Paris; Mori Art Museum, Tokyo; and Johannesburg Art Gallery, Johannesburg. He participated in canonical exhibitions dedicated to African art, including Africa Remix: Contemporary Art of a Continent (2004–07). Mabunda is also the co-founder and co-director of Karl Marx 18-34 in Maputo.
