Born in Vichy, France, in 1925, he has shown interest in various artistic expressions, particularly representational forms such as painting and cinema. He also engaged in numerous activities related to cinema, including criticism, which he contributed to the magazine O Tempo e o Modo between 1964 and 1966, as well as assistant directing and production. In the mid-1950s, he embraced photography as his preferred medium of expression, beginning a body of work that continues to this day. Although he never ceased photographing, his production decreased in intensity from the early 1960s but was revitalized in 1982 with the exhibition Fotografias de 1956 a 1982, accompanied by a catalogue, organized by Galeria Ether, Lisbon. His later career was marked by participation in numerous group exhibitions and solo shows, including Insignificâncias (Centro de Arte Moderna, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, 1986) and Simulacro e Trompe l’Oeil (Museu Gulbenkian, Lisbon, 1996). In 2004, the Centro de Exposições at the Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisbon, organized the retrospective exhibition Oui / Non and its accompanying catalog. Recently, he compiled a collection of scattered essays on the nature of photographic images, his work, and that of other photographers, published under the title Reflexões sobre Fotografia (Assírio & Alvim, Lisbon, 2004).
