Carlos Calvet (Lisbon, 1928–2014), an architect trained at the Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto (ESBAP), devoted more than 50 years to painting while also exploring graphic arts, including screen printing, engraving, and lithography. He also used photography as a medium of expression and experimented with film. In 1940, he co-founded the group Os Surrealistas alongside Mário Cesariny, Pedro Oom, Henrique Risques Pereira, António Maria Lisboa, Mário Henrique Leiria, Fernando José Francisco, Fernando Alves dos Santos, and Cruzeiro Seixas. The year 1966 marked the beginning of a new phase in his career, characterised by a metaphysical pop style that defined his later work. Awarded by the Centro de Arte Moderna – the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1983, he held numerous exhibitions in Portugal and internationally in cities such as Tokyo, Paris, São Paulo, Chicago, Rome, Montreal, Frankfurt, and Madrid.
