Augusto Cabrita (1923–1993) was born in Barreiro. He is recognised as a significant figure in Portuguese cinema, having taken on various roles such as director, producer, and cinematographer—most notably for his contributions as director of photography on the film Belarmino by Fernando Lopes. Cabrita collaborated with RTP from its inception in 1957, including directing the first live outdoor broadcast during Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Portugal that same year. His passion for photography led him to establish his own studio in Barreiro in 1956, which became a landmark for prominent national musicians, such as Amália Rodrigues, who sought his expertise for their album covers. Cabrita’s photographic work focused on Barreiro and was shared with the public through numerous solo and group exhibitions from the late 1940s onwards. His photography is also featured in several books, including the standout publication Na outra margem - O Barreiro: Anos 40-60 (CUF - Companhia União Fabril, SGPS, SA, Lisbon, 1999).
